DIM has shown a number of health benefits for men with BPH who are looking to restore their prostate health. Diindolylmethane (DIM) is a phytonutrient that has the ability to promote and support metabolism of estrogen and related hormones by enhancing the liver’s ability to metabolize estrogen to a weaker factor called 2-hydroxyestrone.
Significant amounts of DIM are released in the body when gastric acid acts on indole-3-carbinol, the precursor to DIM, during digestion. DIM may improve prostate function and reduce the incidence of prostate cancer by interfering with the growth of cancer cells and stimulating cell suicide.
At least one study has indicated that among older men who have BPH, taking DIM may improve reduce nighttime urination. (Zeligs) Both DIM and indole-3-carbinol are available as supplements, although absorbable DIM is recommended because only about 10 percent of indole-3-carbinol is converted to DIM in the gut.
